Dorothy Gene (Graham) Cossabone

September 5, 1942 — December 30, 2021

Amarillo

Dorothy Gene Cossabone, 79,  of Amarillo,  passed away December 30, 2021, after a short battle with lung cancer.  Funeral services will be at 11:00 am. Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw, 8310 S. Coulter. Amarillo, TX

Dorothy was born to  Sebron T. and Dovie Graham on September 5, 1942 in Hamlin, Texas. She had three brothers Don, ST, and David who taught her to stand her ground and to hold her own. She was married at 14 and raised three independent daughters.  She worked the farm, took care of the animals, tended the garden, and made the majority of the girls' clothing all on her own. Later, she met and married Robert Cossabone on April 13, 1984.  She went back to school and started a career at the American Quarter Horse Association as a registration supervisor. Dorothy loved the girls, the clients she worked with, and being a part of the community. She retired after 30 years of service.  Rob and Dorothy loved to country dance, even until recently.  He loved to twirl her around the dance floor and show her off to anyone around. She was his pride and joy. They also loved to travel around the Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico panhandles together. In 1983, Dorothy became known to everyone as Granny. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren more than anything in the world. Granny was always ready for Saturday lunch and shopping, helping out with anything that was going on, or taking care of a great-grandchild. She was often referred to as the family’s ‘true north’.  As the matriarch, she stood behind what was right and wasn't afraid to tell you the truth or her honest opinion.  She reminded us that family comes first, no matter the circumstances, and that love and forgiveness reaches beyond bitterness and anger. Granny loved gardening.  She loved making the plan, picking the seeds, planting the vegetables, and watching them grow.  Many conversations and life lessons were held in the mornings and evenings walking around the garden picking the weeds. The best part of her vegetable garden was the fresh okra she picked. She then fried it in a way no one else has ever been able to duplicate.

She is survived by her husband Rob Cossabone, her three daughters, and their families.  Debbie and husband Tony Hurst of Amarillo, Carrie Christian of Amarillo, and Jennifer and Husband Jess Weatherly of Granbury. She has 8 grandchildren, Lindsey (and husband Tyler), Brady, Blair, Chad, Cooper (and wife Bailey), Harley, Jaryn and Jensen and 6 great-grandchildren Lowry, Hadley, Tice, Kolbi, Tinley, and Orion.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Don Graham.
