Obituary

Vivienne "Viv" Ray Andrews Huckabay, age 85, passed away peacefully in Amarillo, Texas, on August 22, 2026.

Born in Amarillo on June 14, 1941, to Raymond and Mary Mildred Vineyard-Andrews, Viv grew up in Clovis, New Mexico, where she graduated from Clovis High School in 1959. She went on to attend West Texas State University, earning her degree in 1963. That same year, she married William Lane Huckabay III and moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she launched her devoted career as an educator.

After taking a brief pause from teaching to welcome her daughter, Mary Alicia, in 1969, and son, Lane, in 1971 in Albuquerque, Viv returned to the classroom in 1972. In 1973, she relocated to Amarillo and joined the faculty at Lamar Elementary School. Over the next 30 years, Viv taught fourth, fifth, and sixth grades, shaping generations of students before retiring in 2003. Her passion for education earned her the Lamar Teacher of the Year award twice.

A lifelong Christian, Viv lived her faith daily through her kind, loving, generous, and welcoming spirit. She was an avid reader, an exceptional card player, and a passionate traveler, with Spain and Scotland holding special places in her heart.

Viv was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved son, William Lane Huckabay IV; her brother, Guy Jo Andrews; her former sister-in-law, Ruth Huckabay Chesney; and her nephew, Kent Chesney.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Alicia Huckabay of Amarillo; her cousins, Eugene Vineyard of Georgia, Frank and Lynda Andrews of Fort Worth, and Kay Nell Harris of Austin; and her nephew, Bryant Chesney of Washington. Her warmth and legacy live on through her family, friends, former students, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.
