Thomas Rosier Wingate, Jr., 84 of Amarillo, TX passed away Sunday, September 14, 2025. Born on September 9, 1941, in Dalhart, Texas to Thomas Rosier Wingate and Mildred Hart Wingate. Thomas (Tommy) was adopted as a newborn, as was his younger sister Louise. When Tommy was still young, his mother married Chester Park, who became a devoted and wonderful stepfather throughout his life.
Tommy grew up in Amarillo, in the panhandle of West Texas. It was there that he was baptized and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Tommy pursued many interests after graduating from Amarillo High School, including attending General Motors Institute and furthering his education with a bachelor’s degree in business from Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Tommy owned and operated Amarillo Imports dealership for several years. He enjoyed collecting antique miniature trains and the friends who also participated in this interest. Automobiles of all make and models were included in his favorite pastimes. Tommy built and collected antique automobiles and raced his 1927 Ford streamlined roadster with a team of friends at Bonneville, UT, breaking an existing record at 165 MPH on the salt flats with a 1941 Ford flathead V8 engine in the year 1968. On Friday nights at home, in the 1960’s and early 1970’s, Tommy could be found at the Amarillo Dragway racing his 1932 Ford Coupe. He also entered many local car shows and was a member of the Crusaders Car Club of Amarillo. Tommy was an avid reader and a walking encyclopedia regarding Texas Panhandle history (particularly the Indian Wars). He could discuss varied happenings, wars and historical events for hours on end with his friends who had the same interests.
Tommy was a kind, respected, and valued friend to those who were acquaintances in his circle.
Tommy was preceded in death by parents Thomas and Mildred Wingate, his stepfather Chester Park, his sister Louise Wingate Berry and brother-in-law Charles Berry.
He is survived by his stepbrother, Ross Park. He is also survived by nieces Christy Berry Galtney and husband Matt, Courtney Berry McCabe and husband Chris, and Cydney Berry Padon and husband Matthew; also, several great-nieces and great-nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch.
