Steve Martin Bautista, 53, of Amarillo, Texas left this world far too soon on October 5, 2026, after a fierce, stubborn-to-the-end battle with cancer.
Steve was the firstborn of Guadalupe and William Bautista in San Antonio, where he attended Catholic school and survived the nuns. Once in Amarillo, he excelled in choir and woodworking in high school. His parents cherished the picnic dinner table that he crafted, which helped serve many meals to his family and friends. Steve had the smile and personality to collect not just friends, but friends who became family. He was always a private person and, at the same time, the brightest light in the room.
Never one to take himself too seriously, he did what brought him joy, whether that was owning a shop, being a mechanic, MC-ing roller derby bouts, being a photographer, officiating weddings, giving speeches at Toastmasters, and then finally landing where his heart truly lay - cooking. He poured everything into learning, experimenting and composing delicious food for people. Steve lived by the Hunter S. Thompson quote, “Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride.” He lived life by his own rules, taking chances and, when necessary, creating them himself.
Steve was preceded in death by his mom, Lupe. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his dad, Bill; his wife of 13 years, Josephine Fogo; his biggest cheerleader, daughter Beta (husband Cody) of Dumas; his right hand sous chef, son Dray (fiance’ Tori) of San Antonio, Hannah (fiance’ Mav) of Amarillo, 3 grandchildren; Leam, Ezaria and Gwenivere, who lovingly called him “Chief” - the title he was the proudest of, three younger siblings, Paul (wife Ashley) of Lubbock, Kristen (husband Ernest) of Amarillo, and Matthew of Amarillo; along with many nieces and nephews.
The Rosary and Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 10, from 5:00 - 7:00p.m. at LaGrone Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Home - 8310 S. Coulter St. The Rosary will begin at 5:00 p.m. followed by the Celebrating of Life. Guests are encouraged to wear colorful outfits.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you enjoy a good meal with your family and friends as “you learn a lot about someone when you share a meal together” - Anthony Bourdain.
