Richard Carlton Sandefer

October 12, 1933 — February 8, 2024

Amarillo

Richard Carlton Sandefer passed away at the age of 90 on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at his family home in Amarillo, Texas.

Richard was born on October 12, 1933, to James Thomas Sandefer and Eula Mae Cook in Morton, Texas. He spent his childhood growing up on a farm in Portales, NM, with his 9 siblings. He attended high school, where he met his lifelong companion, Mary Louise Barbee. They were married on July 11, 1952, and were blessed with 5 children.

Known as Sandy by his friends, he will be remembered as an active individual who made friends wherever he went. His love for the outdoors and the old west was evident, as he chose a career working as a Cowboy at ranches all over NM and West Texas – most notably the Masterson & Stinnet, Turkey Track, JY Ranch, and the Johnson Ranch.

During his retirement, he kept busy seeking antique treasures at garage sales, watching westerns, and playing his harmonica during family reunions.

Richard leaves behind his wife, Mary; a sister, Fadean of Glendale, AZ; a brother, Rex Earick of Roswell, NM; 5 children, Kay, Carl, Daryl, Clifford, and Wendell; 10 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.

The family will have a Celebration of Life on Saturday, March 30th, 2024, at 2:00 pm at the family home: 4301 McCormick Road, Amarillo, Texas. All are welcome to share food and memories.
