Lois was born April 26, 1920 in Paris, Texas to Walter and Minnie Proffitt.  She moved with her family to Giles, Texas in Donley County, where her family farmed for many years.  She graduated from Hedley High School in 1940.  Lois moved to Amarillo and married Myron Gerber, the love of her life, on February 15, 1947.  She grew up during the Great Depression when times were hard, and a united family and hard work was the only way of life.  Lois would occasionally talk about these difficult times, but only to compare it to her present life.  She would tell the story of how she remembered at one time during the depression her family had only one dime in the house.
Lois worked for the Amarillo School District and retired from Amarillo College in 1979.  She was a dedicated employee and her work ethic was her badge of honor.
Lois was a unique lady.  She never said a bad word about anybody and never complained about anything.  She adored her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  She was known to all of us by Mother, Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma and Mammy.  Lois spent her entire life serving others.  The scripture, “Welcome home, my good and faithful servant”, describes her life here on earth.  She was truly the Matriarch of her family.  Words cannot describe how much she will be missed.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers, three sisters and a great-granddaughter.
She is survived by her daughter Sandra Houdashell and husband Ernie, son Don Gerber and wife Rosemarie, all of Amarillo,  six grandchildren, Clay Houdashell and Scott Houdashell, Michelle Bonilla and husband Jeremiah, Laurinda Lomeli, Eddie Gerber and wife Misty all of Amarillo, Michael Gerber of Rancho Cucamonga, California, and six great-grandchildren.
