Lewis Lee Helfenbein, Sr.

October 12, 1939 – May 14, 2025

The world lost a unique and beloved character when Lewis Lee Helfenbein passed away on Wednesday morning, May 14, 2025, after suffering a heart attack on Monday, May 5. Wherever he went, Lewis brought a spark of love, humor, wisdom, and down-to-earth common sense.

A proud “Okie,” Lewis was born in Shattuck, Oklahoma, to Bertha Schoenhals Helfenbein and David Helfenbein on October 12, 1939. He grew up on a farm just outside of Shattuck, and carried those humble, hardworking roots with him throughout his life.

Lewis spent over 33 years working for Trans World Airlines as a crew chief of the ground crew. In his own words, he was a “pilit” who would “take the luggage off of this pile and ‘pile it’ over on that pile,” always delivering his dry wit with a twinkle in his eye.

On June 12, 1971, Lewis became a sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous and remained active in the Fellowship for the rest of his life. In fact, he had just returned from a weekend Ceta Canyon Conference the day before his heart attack—a fitting testament to his commitment and love for the program and its people.

Lewis was the proud father of Kim Helfenbein (Jennifer Young), Brenda Cranford (Troy), Lee Helfenbein (deceased 2017), and Tim Landon (Kristi). He is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Ryan Cranford (son of Brenda and Troy); Candace and James (children of Lee); and Connor, Braydan, Carly and Makennah (children of Tim and Kristi). He is also survived by great-grandchildren Erik and Kolton (sons of Candace), Darcy (daughter of James). Lewis was a devoted stepfather to Lisa Caid and her children, Wynne, Wiley, and Woodrow. He shared 44 wonderful years of marriage with his loving wife, Wynona.

Lewis was the last surviving member of eight siblings and leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and many devoted members of the Fellowship who will miss his warmth, humor, and storytelling.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Old Corral Club, 1301 S. Taylor, Amarillo, Texas 79101.
