Leona “LUCILLE” Huston Moore

April 30, 1938 – July 17, 2023 (85)

Leona “LUCILLE” Huston Moore was born in Boise City, Oklahoma to Alfred C. and Pearl Leona Huston and attended schools in Boise City, then three semesters at Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, Texas. She returned to Boise City to work at the US Department of Agriculture office.

She moved to Amarillo in May 1959 and started working in August at Amarillo Air Force Base until the end of December 1962. Lucille met and married Ben G. Moore on June 25, 1960. In 1964, Ben and a partner started Ford Tire Shop, recapping used tires and selling new tires. Lucille became the bookkeeper for the business for 28 years. After the partnership was dissolved, she learned to help in the tire recapping process. When Ben became ill in 1991, the business was closed and Lucille cared for him until his death in January 2000.

Lucille had various hobbies, which included different carpentry projects. A few times Lucille would come up with an idea and Ben would say, “Why didn’t you think of that sooner?”

She loved participating in different events at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Amarillo, where she was a member for 60 years. She joined the long-time senior choir (Solid Gold Singers) where the group under Glen Walls learned many lively Southern Gospel songs and would sing at different nursing homes and even other churches. Lucille participated in the Regional Choir Festivals where many church groups across the state came to First Baptist Church, Amarillo. Other choirs liked the Solid Gold Singers’ lively music style and began to learn and perform.

Lucille was proceeded in death by her husband of 40 years, Ben G. Moore, her parents, two brothers, Lester D. Huston and Lewis C. Huston, one sister, Mary Louise Cullop and three great-grandsons, Aden Rivera, Roland, and James Turner.

She is survived by her children, A.J. Moore, wife Cindy of Frankford, Delaware, Gilbert R. Moore of Carlsbad, New Mexico, daughter, Geneva P. Rollins of Amarillo, TX., five grandchildren, Alan R. Moore, wife Brodey, two step-grandsons David Tinna and Michael Tinna, great-grandchildren, JonahRae Turner, Tuck Turner, Cameron Moore, Sailor Moore and Maven Moore, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
