Katie Elaine Skinner Rains, of Amarillo, passed away on September 8, 2026, at her home. She was born on January 18, 1937, in Grand Saline, Texas, to Oree Whitt Skinner Johnson and Henry Lee Skinner. She played volleyball at Grand Saline High School and continued to play after moving with her mother and two younger brothers to Plainview, Texas in 1954.
Elaine worked at Critney Drug in Plainview, where she met her future husband, Olen Elmore Rains, after he saw her through the window. He then went in to buy a pair of nail clippers that normally cost 25 cents, but she charged him a dollar and he paid it. Elaine and Elmore were married June 30, 1955, after she graduated from high school. They were married 67 years at the time of his death. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.
Elaine and Elmore lived in Hereford, Texas, before moving to Thoreaux, New Mexico, for Elmore to work for Transwestern Pipeline. While living there, she worked as a substitute teacher at the local Indian Reservation school.
Elaine was primarily a homemaker but did work at SPS and as a substitute teacher for the first 7 years of their marriage. After moving back to Hereford, she helped Elmore manage the bail bonding business and the small natural gas pipeline that he managed.
Elaine loved to play bridge with her sister, Adell, and managed to win several tournaments. She also played bridge with her husband and their lifelong friends, Bub and Georgia Sparks, Herschel and Ruth Black, Dean and Marry Herring and Jim and Dorothy Mercer.
Elaine was known for her Italian cream cakes (watch out for the toothpicks) along with other baked goods, including making her own pie crusts. She was also known for the layered salad that she took to all family functions.
Her biggest passion was her family, whether it was her immediate family or extended family. She and Elmore were fortunate to adopt two children, Elizabeth in 1962 and Douglas in 1966.
Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Elmore; her parents; her sisters, Adell and Imogene and her brothers, Leroy, Dean, Benny and Phil.
She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Rains and son, Douglas Rains, both of Amarillo; her granddaughter, Danielle Mulherin and husband, Matt, of Amarillo; grandson, Andrew Lookingbill and wife, Jaqui, of Carney’s Point, New Jersey; great-grandsons, Dallen, Everitt, Liam and Noah; and great-granddaughter, Bella.
A visitation for family and friends will be held at LaGrone Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors on Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 2-4pm. The funeral service will be on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 2pm at the funeral home chapel with Mr. Ira Purdy of Central Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to a charity of your choice in Elaine's memory.
