James ‘Harold’ Stokes, 83, of Amarillo, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 5, 2026.
A born and raised Texas Panhandle man, Harold was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and faithful Christian whose steady presence and quiet strength touched everyone who knew him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Donna Stokes; his three sons and two daughters; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
A skilled sheet metal engineer and master welder, Harold was known as a man who could build or fix anything. He spent much of his life working with his hands and solving problems with remarkable intelligence, practicality, and precision. Those who knew him well would call him a real-life superhero strong enough to lift cars, yet beneath that strength was a gentle and even-tempered man with a deep love for his family. No one was ever too far away that Harold wouldn’t come to your rescue, with a truck full of anything and everything you may need.
Harold found joy tending his 14-acre property, where he raised pigs, chickens, pheasants, and even a few emu’s once upon a time. His land in Valle de Oro was his private oasis for building, hiking, tinkering, and designing the dream home he hoped to one day build there. Sharp-minded and a man of few words blessed with a million dollar sense of humor, he lived simply and intentionally, valuing hard work, humility, laughter, and the people he loved most.
Above all else, Harold loved his wife, Donna, with all his heart. Married in 1982, she was and will forever be the love of his life. He was an incredible father and a steadfast example of patience, wisdom, and devotion to his family. His faith was central to his life, and he was a devoted and loved member of Grace Church.
A celebration of Harold’s life will be held on May 19, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
