She was the youngest child in her family among brothers George and Merlin Conklin. She was raised and attended school in Hereford. At the age of 18, Caren became the youngest person to earn a Master Degree in Education from West Texas State University. While there, she met Billy Joe Greenhouse, they were married on June 12, 1953, and remained together until Caren’s passing.
Caren taught at Sam Houston Junior High for several years. She left teaching to focus on raising her children and grandchildren, and they benefited from her experience as an educator and her loving attention. Hobbies included cooking, painting, crocheting, sewing, creating braided rugs, and playing the piano. Caren loved animals, and cats around her property always had food and shelter. She raised beautiful flowers and grew fresh strawberries and tomatoes.
She is survived by her husband Billy, children Janey Morgan and husband Billy, Bill Greenhouse and wife Debbie, and Jim Greenhouse. Grandchildren include Michelle Urbanczyk and husband Craig, Amanda Shelton and husband Neil, Megan Greenhouse, and Alec Greenhouse, with great-grandchildren Addie, Jack, and Morgan Shelton and Beckham Urbanczyk.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to BSA Hospice of the Southwest, LaGrone, Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Home, and Llano Cemetery for helping Caren complete her journey. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Gracie’s Project, PO Box 2512, Amarillo, TX 79110, www.graciesproject.com
