Bonnie Jean Blackwell, 98, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on April 30, 2026, just as she had wished. Born December 10, 1927, she was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend whose warmth, creativity, and strength touched everyone she knew.
Bonnie grew up during the Great Depression in a very poor family. Her father, Sigmond Loi Harrison, worked operating a dredge on the Mississippi River and along the Gulf Coast, causing the family to move constantly. Bonnie and her sister often stayed with relatives, and she never spent a full year at any one school. These experiences built her remarkable adaptability and resilience.
In December 1946, after years of dating, — often walking the beaches in Galveston — she married the love of her life, Terry Henry Blackwell Jr. Together they raised three children: Tommy, Don, and Diane.
A devoted homemaker, Bonnie was known for her sewing, clothing repairs, and delicious home-cooked meals. Their home was a true heaven on earth and a safe haven for her family. She made sure her grandchildren were always safe, well-fed, clean, and clothed. She never missed a birthday celebration with one of her special homemade cakes, often stayed up late helping with homework, and filled the house with the wonderful aroma of pot roast, potatoes, and carrots. A favorite treat was her fudge pie with vanilla bean ice cream.
Bonnie was fortunate to have her youngest son Tommy caring for her since 1988 after the loss of her husband. She called him “the light of her life.” She loved gardening, swimming, beach visits, camping, traveling, square dancing, playing games, and taking pictures. Always positive, she hummed and sang while doing chores. She faithfully attended church, tithed 10%, donated annually to Boys Ranch, and shared joy through made-up songs and stories. She was very close with her caretaker Linda.
She is survived by her children Tommy, Don, and Diane, grandchildren Missy, Sarah, Kimberly, Donnie and others, 15 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Terry Henry Blackwell Jr.
Bonnie Jean lived a full life of love, faith, and devotion to family. As she often embodied, “Rejoice always… give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). Her joyful spirit and generous heart will be deeply missed
