Marvin George Herber, 94, of Amarillo died peacefully in his sleep on December 14, 207. A memorial

service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, March 31, 2018 in the Fellowship Hall at Texline United

Methodist Church, 301 E. Walnut Street, Texline, Texas.

Marvin George Herber was born in Lahoma, Oklahoma on December 8, 1923 to George and Emma (Wagner) Herber. His family moved to the Draper community near Texline in 1929 and embarked on a farming career on a property which still remains in the Herber family.

Upon graduation from High School, Marvin received 3 college scholarships, but declined to enroll due to his love of farming. Marvin served in the Navy from 1944-1946 as a gunner on a Merchant Marine fuel tanker in the South Pacific. After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to the Texline area to take up his passion for farming and ranching, with his father.

While in high school in Texline, he met Nan Newlon, 6 years his junior, who tried to fix him up with her sister. Several years later he told a friend she was the girl he was going to marry and made that happen on November 3, 1951.

Sons Steve (1952) and Tim (1955) were born while living on the original home place near his parents. Shortly afterwards, they moved to their own property closer to Texline. In 1957, their daughter Karen was born.

In 1970, Marvin and Nan purchased a summer resort property, The Oxyoke Riverside Resort in Lake City, Colorado that became their summer home. Nan, Karen and Tim moved there that first summer to operate the business with Marvin traveling back and forth as needed and Steve helping on the family farm. They owned and operated the resort until 1996, when they sold it and invested in a mountain home nearby.

Marvin had a tremendous work ethic, which he tried to impart to his children. He was always busy with a project and remained actively working on the farm/ranch until he was 91 – leaving it reluctantly when it became necessary to do so. Marvin was frugal and financially savvy – a great provider for his family. He made the farm yield more than just a crop, but a livelihood for three generations.

In June of 2015, Marvin suffered a head injury and never fully recovered. He was always “young” for his age, but this incident caused his age to catch up with him. He fought valiantly to overcome this set-back. In July of 2016, Marvin and Nan moved to the Brookdale Retirement facility in Amarillo, Texas, having sold the farm during the previous year. The original property of his father was retained and is operated by Tim.

On December 14, 2017 Marvin died peacefully in his sleep.

Marvin is survived by Nan, his wife of 66 years along with their three children: Steve (Beth) of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Tim (Crystal) of Texline, Texas, and Karen Pickford of Santa Barbara, California. Other surviving members of the family include his grandchildren: Justin Herber (Jessica) of West Hollywood, California, Jason Herber (Ali) of Santa Paula, California, Jena Whitney (Tad) of Mosquero, New Mexico, Valerie Herber of Amarillo, Texas and Reid Pickford of Santa Barbara, California. Three great grandchildren complete the family tree: Katy, Allie and Laurie Whitney of Mosquero, New Mexico. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, George and Emma, but is survived by his three siblings: Joy Heuser of Roseville, California, Carol Porter of Texline and Gary (Kathern) Herber of Texline. He is also survived my numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Marvin touched the lives of many people and will be missed by all. He leaves behind a legacy of perseverance and commitment to his family, his farm, and his church.

We wish to thank BSA Hospice of Amarillo and the staff at Heartis Assisted Living for making his final weeks comfortable. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The United Methodist Church of Texline, Texas.
