Charles Abercrombie

May 26, 1926 — October 17, 2017

Charles Abercrombie, of Amarillo, went home to be with his Lord, October 17, 2017. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, October 20, at Second Baptist Church, 419 North Buchanan, with Rev. Stuart Graves, Dale Rollins, and Gary Abercrombie officiating. Burial will be in Erick Cemetery, Erick, Oklahoma, on Friday, October 20, 2017, at 3 p.m. with Jeff Staton reading scripture and prayer.
Charles was born May 26, 1926 in a two-room house on the Downs farm, south of Erick. Parents were the Rev. Charlie M. and Olivia Downs Abercrombie. He served in the Navy as a Pharmacist’s Mate during W.W. II. After the war, he attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University and graduated in May, 1949, with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, and was awarded the Doctorate of Pharmacy on November 1, 2001.
While at Southwestern, he met Mary Campbell and they were married December 30, 1948, at Hollis, Oklahoma, with Rev. Abercrombie officiating. Charles paid his dad $5.00 for doing the ceremony. Rev. Abercrombie gave it back to him saying, “You need it more than I do.”
Charles worked in Hollis at the City Drug and the Hollis Drug during the summer and fall of 1949. Charles, Mary, and baby Patricia moved to Amarillo in December, 1949. He worked at the Ratliff Drugstore, 1200 NE 8th, two years.
Charles purchased an interest in S & H Drugstore in 1952 and bought the interest of his partner, Johnny Stovall, in 1954. He practiced pharmacy on Northeast 8th/Amarillo Blvd. for 30 years. He received the fifty-year service award in Pharmacy from Oklahoma and Texas.
They came to Amarillo to stay one year. The local folks were nice, and the climate was pleasant, so they stayed. Charles often said his customers/patients were the most wonderful folks anyone could hope to deal with. They were his friends.
Charles and Mary joined Grand Avenue Baptist Church soon after coming to Amarillo. He served as deacon for many years. He was a Republican precinct chairman for a number of years and was a member of Amarillo Genealogical Society and High Plains Scottish Society.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Alisyn Rollins, and two brothers-in-law, Dr. Charles Graves and Donald Staton, a nephew, Mark Graves and a great niece.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, and four children: Gary and Janice of Plainview, Patricia and Bill Worthen, Carolyn and Dale Rollins and Jana and Terry Carver, all of Amarillo; eleven grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Two sisters: Glenda Staton of Amarillo, and Dorla and husband Dwayne Fischer of Oklahoma City.
